John Barnett Ltd, Worcester & Bromyard

John Barnett set up business in 1873 when aged only 21. From premises in The Avenue, he traded as a coal and forage merchant. By 1879 he had wharves at Lowesmoor, on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, by which coal arrived and also premises at Shrub Hill Station, suggesting that he was already operating railway wagons. In 1900, following an early death at the age of 48, his son, Frederick Langford Barnett, took over the running of the business. Coal was supplied by the wagon load to all stations in Worcestershire and the slogan "Burn Barnett's Coal" became widespread.

Although it is suggested that there were wagons as early at 1879, there is no evidence of this. The first known wagons for Barnett were 2x 10-tonners purchased over seven years and ordered from the Gloucester RC&WCo. in September 1901. In January 1902 3x 8-ton and 2x 10-ton wagons were ordered, with a further 2x 10-ton in 1903.

We have selected No. 45 as our limited edition model, this was ordered in January 1902. It has five planks, side doors, brakes one side and measures 14ft 5in x 6ft 11in x 3ft 1in. It is painted chocolate with white letters shaded black, as were all Barnett's wagons.
